Knotless braids and box braids look similar once installed, but they start very differently at the root — and that changes how they feel, look and wear.
The difference at the root
Box braids begin with a small knot where the braiding hair is attached to your natural hair. Knotless braids start with your own hair and feed in braiding hair gradually, so there is no knot.
Side-by-side
| Knotless braids | Box braids | |
|---|---|---|
| Tension at the root | Lower | Higher at first |
| Look at the base | Flat, natural | Defined, classic |
| Styling on day one | Easier to put up | May need a few days |
How to choose
If comfort and a natural-looking part matter most, choose knotless. If you love the defined, classic look, box braids remain a great choice. Both are protective styles.
